Sikkim, nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, is endowed with remarkable biodiversity, diverse agro-climatic conditions, fertile soils, abundant rainfall, and a rich horticultural heritage. Recognizing the immense potential of horticulture in the region, the Central Agricultural University, Imphal established the College of Horticulture, Bermiok, South Sikkim in 2015 with the vision of strengthening education, research, extension, and human resource development in the field of horticulture.
The College is committed to developing skilled and competent human resources capable of addressing the emerging needs of the horticultural sector and contribute meaningfully to the welfare of farming communities. Its mandate encompasses quality education, need-based research, development of location-specific and sustainable horticultural technologies, and effective dissemination of knowledge and technologies among farmers and other stakeholders. With a vision of academic excellence and innovation, the College strives to impart quality education in various branches of horticulture while promoting research and technological advancement in horticulture and allied disciplines. Through its academic, research, and extension activities, the College aims to contribute towards sustainable horticultural development and the overall socio-economic advancement of the region. At present, the College offers an undergraduate programme leading to the degree of B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture and a postgraduate programme leading to the degree of M.Sc. (Vegetable Science). These programmes provide students with opportunities to acquire strong theoretical knowledge, practical skills, research aptitude, and professional competencies required to address contemporary challenges in horticulture and allied fields.
The College is steadily developing as a centre for quality education, research, innovation, and extension in horticulture. With its focus on emerging areas such as organic horticulture, climate-resilient agriculture, precision farming, mushroom production protected cultivation, crop improvement, and sustainable production technologies, the institution seeks to prepare students and researchers to meet the changing needs of the horticultural sector. Sikkim has earned national and international recognition for its commitment to organic and sustainable agriculture. In this context, the College of Horticulture, Bermiok aspires to play a pivotal role in advancing organic horticulture, climate-smart farming, modern vegetable production, and sustainable horticultural practices. Through collaborative research, quality education, technological innovation, and effective extension services, Our goal is to make Sikkim a leading centre of excellence in sustainable and organic horticulture.
